@LVMHPrize finalist @SindisoKhumalo's designs are inspired by her heritage, namely her mother, a former political activist who fought against the apartheid regime in South Africa, as well as her maternal grandmother, who was a master pattern cutter and sample machinist. Throughout each of Khumalo's collections, one can find prints inspired by African folktales that have been hand-painted or illustrated by the designer. And when it comes to her hands-on, atelier-style approach to building each collection, Khumalo established a partnership with a local NGO in Cape Town called Embrace Dignity (@embracedignity) that helps women get off the streets and guides them toward long-term careers. Through these partnerships, the designer and her team train women in hand embroidery and crochet, and help them to support themselves and their families through the work.
So how does such a community-based brand navigate a lockdown? More community—just from a distance. At the link in our bio, the designer discusses how she’s staying positive during lockdown and why her heritage always keeps her moving forward. Photo by @jonathan_kope.
