Photo by @PaulNicklen | Unicorns really do exist—sea unicorns, that is. We photographed this pod of narwhals near Baffin Island from my ultralight airplane, where we watched as they dove under the ice to feed on polar cod. These small whales, with six- to 10-foot-long ivory tusks, add something otherworldly to this land of water and ice where, sometimes, the daylight never ends. The only downside with encounters like this is that, eventually, we have to land.
