The Hat

“Keep this on and I will give you a mini Chupa Chup.”
“But why ? I can’t breathe.”
“Because of the virus...”
“Oh... is the lolly rainbow coloured?”
“No but we can go look at rainbows on windows and doors...”

Scoot scoot, cute cute.
“Look at me! I love the hat!” Zoooooooom past shuttered shops, boxes of bananas hanging on for dear life and hopeful kebab shops.

“Cherry blossoms!” It’s surprisingly still in bloom.
I break off a branch. The one thing that doesn’t need to be anti-bac wiped - right? She holds it up to her plastic shielded face to sniff it. Not sure it has a scent but she pretends it does. “It’s so lovely mummy!”

Tesco’s looms. There’s around fifty people in the queue forming a gappy irregular line round to the back of the store culminating by the car park.
The blossoms’ petals have wilted all over her lap. “Why are we waiting? Why is there no more juice left? Where’s my snack?”
Scoot scoot, scowl scowl.

She tilts the hat upwards as if to make sure I see her mouth, making her point heard properly.
“I don’t like this hat, I don’t like the virus and I don’t like you anymore.”
“That’s no good,” says the masked man two metres behind us.
No good in taking her out to the shops? No good attitude? No good hat? Must be the hat.

By the time we sloth our way in, the scooter is hooked onto the buggy. I’m carrying her with one arm, and pushing the wheeled apparatus with the other.
“I can’t carry you and shop and push the buggy at the same time!”
“I just want you to carry me!”
“Can you sit in the buggy, and I get you a snack and more juice?”
“Carry me!” She takes to the floor and screams, smearing hands over floor. All that hard shiny surface. All of those pathogens.
“Ok, look! There’s toys!”
She looks up at the scanty emptied out shelves with a few token toys. The prospect of something new to add to the played-with-once heap at home, dries the tears.

She’s in the buggy and it’s safe to load up the basket with fusilli, milk and cereal (no eggs though - we got there a minute too late).
The Peppa Pig phone she picked out goes silent. The hat’s plastic is steaming up.

In five days time we go again. Hat, scoot, scream, sleep.
