Photos by @maggiesteber | In my fifth day of self-quarantine from the coronavirus, I see a silver lining to this crisis. The whole world has come to a standstill. It’s quiet. I feel this is something we needed to do, or that I needed to do, to catch up with myself. I’m using this gift of time to work on an ongoing project called From the Garden. I collect things from my garden and surrounding areas and organize them on my worktable to create scenarios and stories to keep my imagination active. There are feathers and cat skulls, and a small snake someone ran over. I also collect toys that fit into the scenes, but usually stick to natural things. This week I've been watching the activities of nature’s smallest creatures that live in my garden. Each day brings something new: lots of bees coming to drink water from my cat’s water bowl, a lizard showdown until I broke up the fight! Another day a curly-tail lizard that lives in my garden finally let me feed her bugs from my hand. As worried as I am about the world and work and life in general, this hiatus has also given me a calmness and reconnection. I am relieved of stress, and getting to see the world in small ways instead of big ones. This quarantine gives me time to rediscover nature, and more important, I have to stop and consider the deeper meaning of this pandemic, a far-reaching event that goes beyond the virus. It should make us pay attention to what nature can deliver to us when we do not respect it, despite the signals.

Across the world, people are staying home—and that includes National Geographic photographers. We asked several to share their thoughts on the worlds they see inside—and just outside—their windows.
