村上隆さんのインスタグラム写真 - (村上隆Instagram)「For the past 10 years or so, I have been creating a series of portrait paintings in the same context as the Warhol portrait series. I recently had an opportunity to paint @raphaelangel8183 Raphael, a Japanese comedic YouTuber. For the past several months, I have been immersing myself in various posts by YouTubers for more than six hours a day, albeit while I create my own work. Among such YouTubers, Raphael has been posting his rather silly, vulgar jokes daily, but there is a vague sense of sorrow that pervades his videos, which makes them extremely popular. I recently learned from his autobiography that the cause of this sorrow lay in his childhood. His father was an alcoholic and his parents didn’t get along at all; his earliest memory in his native Kansai region was of him and his sister huddling in their bathtub in each other’s arms, horrified by one of their parents’ fights. The alcoholic father died soon after, but their mother immediately followed suit due to cancer. Raphael eventually joined the Self-Defense Forces and, after holding sales positions for various companies, ultimately became a YouTuber. His style is never to reveal his face, always wearing a plastic facial mask or sunglasses with a medical mask. In his shows, he meets all sorts of people, in the process of which he deepens his understanding of the distortion that ails the Japanese society. I am very much taken by his approach. translation: @tabi_the_fat」3月24日 5時30分 - takashipom
