When my partner and I arrived in the small coastal town of Tofino on Vancouver Island and said we were visiting from New York City, people’s heads went sideways. "In January?" they asked. In some ways, they had a point; it rained for seven days straight. But the temperatures huddled around the 50s during the day. Everything was still green—no snow in sight—and when the sun peeked out from the clouds we would walk along the beach. The island is sleepy this time of year, and you’ll be constantly warned about the local wildlife. Though the weather is gray and the days are short, the reward is peace and quiet. Nearly everywhere we went was completely empty. This image was taken on Chesterman Beach during sunset. We hiked out to a point to watch the gray skies shift to a slight gold.
