ナショナルジオグラフィックさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ナショナルジオグラフィックInstagram)「Photo by Karine Aigner @kaigner | // Supported by Nat Geo Society/Wyss Campaign for Nature committed to protecting 30% of the planet by 2030. // The Harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) is considered one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world—with a wingspan of 6.5 feet (2 m), rear talons up to 3 or 4 inches (8-10 cm) long, and a body weight of 9-20 pounds. Photographing this creature at eye level, from a 22-meter-high tower, was nothing short of surreal. This magnificent rainforest predator inhabits the highest treetops in the canopy. An elusive and difficult-to-see hunter, the harpy eagle has legs as thick as human wrists and feeds on sloths, two-foot-long howler monkeys, armadillos, baby deer, and even peccaries. The harpy mates for life; the female lays two eggs, and the parents spend several months nurturing the first to hatch (the second often perishes). With severe habitat loss, the harpy is a near-threatened species. If the Harpy’s home is protected, so are all the species living in its habitat.
