“For this particular number, we thought about it being an ensemble look where we’re focusing on the whole picture of the group,” said the choreographer @keonemadrid. “At the same time, we wanted the audience to have the opportunity to zoom in on certain people.” In “Beyond Babel” (@beyondbabelshow) at the Gym at @judsonchurchnyc, Keone and his wife, @_marimadrid, present (with @hideawaycircus) a loose retelling of “Romeo and Juliet.” Keone and Mari, San Diego choreographers, tell their story through West Coast urban dance. In this tense moment — in the show it’s performed to “&Burn,” by @ビリー・アイリッシュ (with Vince Staples) — the creators were thinking about immigration issues and came up with the image, Keone said, of “migrating across the waters super shoulder to shoulder.” As Keone told the #nytimes dance critic @giadk, “There is straining into the neck and into the shoulder area to express the tension that’s brewing inside: It feels internal and builds to an external feeling.” @alinarancier made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
