Although this may not sound like much, bare in mind only a very small percentage of the population flies regularly, and this is set to dramatically increase in coming years.  For now there aren’t eco-friendly ways to fly. There are discussions around slowing airplanes down so they don’t burn as much fuel, there are also scientists developing alternative bio-fuels and others looking at electric planes. Regardless, it’s widely considered that we won’t have zero-emission airplanes for at least 20 years.  Whilst you can offset your carbon emissions using schemes such as myclimate.org, ultimately if you want to cut down your own carbon emissions the answer is simply to fly less.  I have made the decision this year to drastically reduce my air travel. It’s been an adjustment as my work has often required international travel, however it’s also caused me to slow down and rethink that nature of travel. Not flying doesn’t mean not travelling!  Although train-lines are underdeveloped and often overpriced, living in Europe it’s possible to travel across many countries without ever boarding a plane. The more people that use trains for travel, the more incentive there will be to invest in this infrastructure.  I’m going to be experimenting this year with finding alternative low carbon ways to travel. I would love to know your thoughts. Are you concerned about air travel?
