In 1960, 17 countries in Africa declared independence. It was a celebratory ending to colonial rule and the complicated beginning of a new chapter in the continent’s history. “The Year of Africa, as it came to be known, was a victory for the black world,” writes Adom Getachew. “It emerged from longstanding global movements for racial equality and gave rise to political and cultural revolutions that forever transformed Africa’s place in the world.” To mark its 60th anniversary, @nytarchives selected archival images to tell the story of the Year of Africa and invited luminaries from the African diaspora — the children of the children of independence — to give us their personal reactions.
