Here, groomed ski trails weave around Independence Mine State Historic Park, the remains of a historic gold mine, which have been beautifully preserved. With colder temperatures than the nearby city of Anchorage, Hatcher Pass has also become a popular destination for backcountry skiers, who climb the surrounding mountains to catch the first downhill ski runs every year.
