It’s estimated that over a billion animals have died already, with many, many more expected to be lost in the coming months. It’s possible that half the koalas population has been lost. Half. And then there are the kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, reptiles, birds- they don’t even count platypuses or bats in the toll, for some reason I don’t quite understand… and their homes in the trees and the bush, the 15 million+ acres that have been burned. Even fish have been affected. Australia may not be in the forefront of our minds now, as more global tragedies mount and there is so much news to take in, but the fires continue to blaze, and once they are contained, the journey to rehabilitate the land will be a long one. I’ve been feeling so helpless. Having just been in Oz, where I fell madly in love with the land and the incredible creatures there, the thought of what has happened is just unfathomable. IUCN’s Save our Species have just started a fund to held re-forest, restore and reintroduce wildlife in the aftermath of the fires. They need to raise as much money as possible to give the vast area of Australian wildlife affected by the fires a chance to recover, over time. It is a detailed and achievable strategy, based on enormous amounts of research and expertise, and I trust that they will do what they set out to do.
