It was besieged in A.D. 70 by the Romans, who encircled it before building an earthen ramp (seen at right) to capture it from its determined Jewish inhabitants. The defenders are said to have died in a mass suicide rather than submit to Roman rule, but the truth of what happened there may never be known.
