Inuvik is located approximately 200 km north of the Arctic Circle and 140 km south of the Arctic Ocean. The only way to get to Inuvik by vehicle is by driving the infamous Dempster Highway - a 736 km all gravel road starting in Dawson City, Yukon. This remote highway is a must-see for many travellers due to its dramatic landscapes, wildlife viewing, camping and hiking opportunities.⠀ ⠀ I’ve driven the Dempster Highway numerous times through all four seasons and various weather conditions. My most memorable Dempster Highway road trip was Canada Day weekend in 2016. My friends and I were driving back to Inuvik after pulling an all nighter (our first wacky idea), and did not fill up our water bottles at the halfway service point (our second wacky idea). Alas, we ended up stranded on the highway in 30℃ heat for over 24 hours without any water and very little food due to a ferry closure. Thankfully, some kind fellow strandees saw our struggle and shared water, juice and coffee with us! From then on, I vowed to always be prepared while on this unpredictable road.⠀ ⠀ Fast forward almost 3 years later to March 2019 and I’m giving the ultimate arctic tour to my siblings starting off with pick up in Dawson City and road tripping to Inuvik. After reaching Inuvik 10 hours later, low and behold the car doors were frozen shut after driving through snow then mud then ice fog. The five of us, just eager to finally get out of the vehicle, had to climb out the windows! This showed me that no matter how prepared I am, the Dempster Highway always has something new to offer. For me, experiencing this beautiful part of the country is worth unpredictable weather or off-kilter plans. ⠀ ⠀ If you are lucky enough to visit the north, don’t be afraid to try new things and listen to the advice locals (especially elders) give you. Things might not always go according to plan, but it will still be an unforgettable trip!⠀ ⠀ #ForGlowingHearts #ExploreCanada⠀ ⠀ 📷: @kellyface__⠀ 📍: @specatcularnwt⠀ ⠀ #SpectacularNWT⠀」1月24日 2時16分 - explorecanada
