Why would someone want to shoot Martin Luther King?” In my bleary eyed state I almost failed him. I began searching my mind for some sanitized version of the story that I deemed more manageable for him or maybe for me, other than the cold hard truth that hatred and horror exists in our world. Instead, I took a deep breath and explained to him that there are people who believe in their hearts that we are not all created equal and that we don’t all deserve the same rights and privileges. I told him that #MLK refused to accept that, and that he was willing to risk his own life for the rights of others so that no human being would have to suffer that kind of injustice again. He was silent for a while then he said “ But all my best friends have brown skin, why would anybody think that way about them?!” I searched myself for an answer and sadly I couldn’t find it. The only thing that came was a defeated “I don’t know...” We talked and talked about the power of our actions, about choosing love and bravery over fear and anger until the light broke through the bedroom curtains filling the room and our hearts with gratitude. Gratitude for a day where we get to remember and celebrate the life of a truly extraordinary man.
