One day while walking around New York with her husband, a street photographer asked to take her portrait. The image, after being shared on the Internet, led to the beginning of her modeling career. JoAni was in her 60s. Since then she has gone on to appear in runway shows and print ads, modeling for brands like Fenty Beauty, Eileen Fisher, and Tommy Hilfiger.  While taking her portrait, I asked JoAni what she thought beauty meant. "I believe that each person needs to find what it is and what it means for them," she says. "And then work it." For the upcoming issue of @natgeo magazine, we explore the many beauty standards that impact women, and take a look at those who are redefining them.
