Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio I The City of Matera, Basilicata, Italy. Known as la Città Sotterranea (the subterranean city), the place is centered on the Sassi di Matera (stones of Matera). The Sassi originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. Miserably poor throughout the centuries, and a burden on the national psyche, the Sassi were forcibly cleared in the 1950s, but in recent years have seen the return of tourists, boutique hotels, and Hollywood film crews.
