In Japan, a novel about a company president who, after long struggling financially and almost committing suicide, finally manages to make a turnaround has become quite a hit. It has been made into a prime-time TV drama, which is very popular. As a small business owner myself, I can hugely empathize. The moment the main characters manage to crawl their ways out of the bottomless pit of misfortune, I get to have a simulated experience of seeing the light of unlikely hope—that there’s a small chance that my company could also be revived!—and for a few seconds feel encouraged. “Yes! You are absolutely right! I will persevere!” I think. But the next moment I find myself faced with the reality that is the pitch darkness, and that makes me fall into depression. It’s great that in the drama, the painful scenes are rendered absolutely grueling and realistic. When the president manages to survive, he shows a fleeting expression of relief mixed with a premonition of new worries to come. I feel consoled by the impeccable and absolutely convincing acting. There are fans of my works that I meet in museums around the world who are kind enough to tell me: “Your work brings happiness to the world. Thank you so much for your creative work filled with sense of mercy.” I wonder what they would think of the reality in which I create the paintings of the smiling flowers amidst such a rock-bottom mentality. Many times a year, I wake myself up screaming, asking myself why in the world I had to become a company president. It is within this routine that I make drawings and produce my smiling characters through methods of structuring contemporary art.
After my death, if an art history program on TV or something of that nature decides to do an episode on me, they may refer to the contrast between the euphoric impression of my completed artworks and the desperateness of the reality I had lived. I wonder if some future struggling small business owners watching it might empathize with me for a fleeting moment.
