The Sami people, who have inhabited the northern regions of Fenno-Scandinavia and Russia for at least 2,500 years, are the reindeer keepers. This image was made during a spring migration in the Laponian area, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Sweden, as a herd left winter grounds to go to calving grounds in the mountains. It was a surreal adventure through a wintery dreamscape, and it's easy to understand how the Sami language has over a hundred different words to describe snow. The evening before, as we moved through a clearing, a strange snow fog descended and everything was white in every direction, with no separation of land and sky.
