I find it kind of overwhelming how connected everything is. It’s normal for people to focus on particular things that affect them, because we’re all human and we relate to what we know, but actually when you expand the conversations you realise that positive change in any single area has the potential for huge knock on effects to a whole web of others. When I visited the @jnj Innovation Centre back in October, I met Hanneke Schuitemaker, who has been working on HIV for over 25 years and now leads all of their viral vaccine programs, including a new HIV vaccine. Knowing what a devastating impact HIV and AIDS have had over the past several decades I found it almost unfathomable that we might be able to put an end to it, not just in my lifetime, but quicker. It exists now.⁣ ⁣ Of the UN Sustainable Development goals, 10/17 have targets specifically relating to HIV, including ending poverty, achieving gender equality and ending hunger - eradicating the disease would have far reaching implications for us as a society as well as having profound effects on the lives of individuals. Thanks to new medications and treatments #jnj has developed over the last 25 years, people living with HIV can lead near normal lives, but the numbers of people infected is still growing year on year, with 1.8 million new infections in 2016. A vaccine to prevent the infection in the first place would have such a radical impact on millions of people across the globe - and large scale trials have begun! @jnj have committed over $500 million over the next four years to help accelerate progress in eliminating HIV by 2030.
