It may look like a veiny eyeball, but Jupiter's moon Europa is more than meets the eye. 👁️
For the first time, scientists have detected water vapor above the icy moon's surface, giving us further evidence that oceans of liquid water may exist beneath Europa's crust.
💧 Water is one of the main ingredients necessary for life, making Europa an alluring destination for exploration. Scientists will soon be able get close enough to this intriguing moon to settle their lingering questions. The Europa Clipper mission, expected to launch in the mid-2020s, will survey the moon up close and sample molecules in its atmosphere.
Seen here is a view of Europa made from images taken by the Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s during a flyby.
