The foreground is the part of the image closest to the viewer, and it is a visual introduction to your subject. It locates the subject in your frame and helps set the image's tone and feeling.
In this photo, I chose to include the icebergs in the foreground to give the Antarctic landscape a sense of depth and scale. I wanted to convey a sense of cold by showing the ice.
