Photo by @daisygilardini | Emperor penguin parents take turns caring for their offspring. After the courtship ritual and mating, the female lays a single egg. It's an energy-consuming process during which she loses about 30 percent of her body weight. The male then incubates the egg for the next couple of months while the female forages at sea. She will return in the spring, when both parents alternate time with the chick in the colony.
Despite the possibility of mistaken identity with so many penguins crowded together in the colony, parents find their partners and chicks by vocalization. Their distinct calls are individually identifiable.
