The kids at my school come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and most are on free or reduced lunch. By the time they're in sixth grade, they are already falling far behind their peers at higher socioeconomic schools, and I believe a huge part of what they need to do in order to succeed is to READ! Most of my students don't have access to books at home and have never been to a public library, which means that the only way for them to receive books is here at school. I truly believe that if you don't love to read, you just haven't found the right book! My goal is to have all of my students find that "right" book that ignites a love for reading! I challenge my students to read 40+ books during their time in 6th grade, and in order to keep them motivated, I recommend books to each of them based on their interests. My classroom library would better serve my students if it were stocked with a variety of books they actually WANT to read!
