(1/6) There are 7.55 billion people on the planet, and we all need to eat. What are viable food sourcing solutions so can we all survive without damaging the planet? Two possible solutions are:
~
1. Aquaculture (certain types done correctly)
2. Regenerative (sustainable) yield in commercial fishing
~
Aquaculture, when done right, is a great solution for feeding us all. There is plenty of good seafood we can farm without destroying the environment: trout, tilapia, catfish, oysters, mussels and clams. Non or less-carnivorous fish species are often ideal for farming.
~
Regenerative yield in commercial fishing is a complex topic, as the definition of sustainability can be different for everyone. Some fishing operations deplete fish stocks until they’ve reached the very brink of the species being able to recover.
~
Even removing sustainably caught fish from the ocean (which are often prey to other species) can be detrimental to another species. Unfortunately, in the fishing industry, the term “sustainably caught” is based on the population of that one species and does not take the balance of the whole ecosystem into consideration.
~
The carbon footprint can also be outrageous, for example, when a fish is caught in the Pacific, filleted in China, canned in the Philippines, and shipped across the sea to the US.
~
What YOU can do to make better choices:
~
1- Consult a guide (Greenpeace, MSC, ASC, OceanWise, etc.) A species can be sustainable on one coast, but not necessarily on the other.
2- Ask your local fishmonger questions: where the fish is from, how it was caught, etc.
3- Look for reliable ecolabels (MSC, OceanWise, WWF, Greenpeace)
4- Vary the type of species that you eat. Be adventurous, try that weird fish. 📷 @legenderryaustin
