Cardinal Newman, an author and scholar who devoted his life to helping the poor and sick, will be the first English person who has lived since the 17th century officially recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Newman will be declared a saint on Sunday 13th October during a service at the Vatican. During his time at the Vatican, The Prince will also attend a reception at the Pontifical Urban College, where Cardinal Newman studied while preparing to become a Catholic priest. Over the years, The Prince of Wales has worked to encourage inter-faith dialogue, greater understanding of different religions both in Britain and abroad, and spiritual freedom.
