I see this photo and I am reminded of the metallic smell that overtook our city. Our first responders and residents breathed and lived in the smell of jet fuel, fire, ash, sorrow, fear and vulnerability. As we absorbed the magnitude of loss, the city immediately unified. Everyone on the street made eye contact, smiling through tears. We hold dear the memory of everyone we lost, we thank those who worked tirelessly, and pray as many continue to live in sickness. Families will never be the same. But thanks to people like Jon Stewart, and so many who continue to carry this mantle 18 years later, we never forget what 9-11-2001 means.
