Melanistic leopard - aka Duke.
Earlier this year a black or melanistic leopard was photographed in Laikipia Kenya, believed initially to be the first time one was captured in 100 years in the wild. However soon after the media made a meal of it, it became apparent that a black leopard had been photographed in 2001, 2007 and 2013 and seen on many other occasions. Perhaps it was because of the motion picture ‘Black Panther’ that the media latched on to it. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that the world is fascinated with and likes leopards especially black ones, but what many don’t know is that they face fierce persecution due to habitat loss, coupled with human/leopard conflict.
