Several years of above-average rains and snowfall have led to rising water levels on the Great Lakes that are threatening beaches, piers and homes.⠀

On the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, one beach was swallowed while the pier and lakewalls at two others are crumbling. Residents of nearby condos have reported cracks in private piers and damage to facades from water seepage.⠀

The water level on lakes Michigan and Huron are currently about 5 inches below an all-time high set in 1986, according to an official with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. That is up about 15 inches from a year ago, and nearly 6 feet higher than a record low in 2013.⠀
