“Music Is Life, Not Math” a bit of street art I came across that made sense when I was lying sideways on this stone in Paris. Music is the sound of feelings. My friend @chipconley says that feelings are somewhat quantifiable in his enlightening book “Emotional Equations”, (Which you should read by the way) so I’m not sure this statement is 100% accurate...wait, I just used a percentage in this comment... Ok, I’m completely confused about how I feel about this statement now. What do you think? #soulrocker #stayhuman #paris #graffiti #streetart

I think whomever wrote this thinks what I thought as I was trying to flipping pass algebra myself! When in life will I ever use letters in any mathematic equation????? I was correct...never. But...Music as this graffiti artist clearly knows...is life. It touches our heart and soul and emotions and thoughts and joys and sadness every single day of our lives if you love it like I do. Music is life. Math?? Doesn't hold a candle... apologies to all the mathematicians out there. @michaelfranti the gift you give to us all...I hope you realize how valuable it is. You can change the direction of a bad day and I turn your music on and I can just feel a little better, and that my friend, is a gift you give all of us! Thank you! 🎸🎻🎼🎶🎵🎷🎹🎷💽🎛️♥️

I think what the artist is staying is that if you connect to the universal life source when you create your music, you don’t need to think about it with your linear mind. And the music is beautiful. And the music creates patterns, which can then be shown to be math. If you start with the math to make the music, it will still be beautiful but it will lack something. Music grown out of life is the most powerful and genuine, and connects to the most people. It becomes a conduit for life force energy. Which is f’in amazing!!! Which is what you do, Michael. So, thank you a hundred times over. You are changing the world by connecting the world, one song at a time. 🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶@michaelfranti

There is a real need for a change of the way the public views math -encouraging the creativity, pattern and intersection with humanity. It’s not acceptable for us to say “we can’t read” so why is it acceptable to say that math is so bad? As someone who has dedicated my life to teaching math, I see this all the time and hope that we can make a change and believe that everyone can do math and succeed in school. We also have to change the way and what we teach in math and hopefully foster confidence in every child so that when they see graffiti like this when they’re an adult, they will just change it to music=life =math.

I think you just asked for 2 cents, multiplied by thousands of followers. MORE math. I tend to think everything is math. Even the hip to waist ratio that makes people partner up, width of shoulders.....>> the timing in conversation that allows some people to be friends right off the bat, the petals in a flower, the Universe. Being behind the beat makes certain music cool - that’s time, that’s math. In conclusion Music and Math both - are life.

I would point out that while music may not be math, both are necessary for life. Music and math are intimately related and intertwined... in composition, performance, and reproduction. I'd also note that savant syndromes generally are limited to math and music, leading some researchers to believe that these are somehow closely related neurologically. (And I'm looking forward to seeing you when you come to Philadelphia in a few months!)

I think that music is mathematical in structure. Like the house is the structure for a home. The house is the frame, and the home comes alive when you add the family and their personal objects and belongings. The music comes to life when the emotions and ideas are expressed through the notes. But it’s built on that mathematical structure that gives form to expression.
