Known simply as “the Arch,” architect Eero Saarinen’s stainless steel construction dominates the St. Louis skyline. Finished in 1965 and standing 630 feet tall, the Gateway Arch is the tallest memorial in the U.S. and its ingenious elevator design allows visitors to enjoy incredible view from the top. In 2010, Karen and Matt Smith quit their jobs to embark on a two-year journey to visit all the national parks. “At the time we finished there were 59 parks. We were thrilled when the #GatewayArch was made the 60th national park, and it felt like an honor and a homecoming to return and take our picture in front of the new entrance sign and get the official stamp in our park passports.” Photo @gatewayarchnps courtesy of Karen and Matt Smith (@mattandkarensmith). #travel #Missouri #FindYourPark #usinterior

I’ve been to 30 national parks now...and I’m not bummed about this. It’s definitely not what I think of when I think National Park, but then again neither was Hot Springs (in the middle of a town), or Pinnacles. The arch is beautiful 💙

As much as I am all for expanding our national park system, this one certainly cheapens the brand. This monument is neither ancient ruins nor natural landscape, it is a structure built in the 1960s and a large manicured lawn.

Let’s hope Congress puts politics aside one of these days (hahaha) and designates this a national monument like it should be.

And also forms one of the best backdrop views in Major League Baseball from most seats in Busch Stadium. ⚾️
