Oh hi 👋🏽 this is a very old picture of me (from a @homepolish shoot at the old DS office) but I have a quick question to ask: I have ONE essay spot left in the Design*Sponge calendar before we close up shop and I have NO idea what to write about. I already have pieces about what I’ve learned from the site and the biggest mistakes I’ve made (and what they taught me) coming up — but is there anything you’d like me to write about or anything you’d like to know before I close up blog camp for good? Any issues or topics or questions you’d like answered? If so, let me know below or in DM. I’m home writing all day today 🖊✏️💻

It may be too late to ask -- I've always wondered how you found the courage to launch and continue improving Design*Sponge, your books, the podcast, and Good Company. How did you not tell yourself: Oh, there are already design blogs, there are so many podcasts, everyone is going to look and see where I fell short, etc? How did you execute what was within your capacity to execute, without feeling bad that it didn't exist yet in it's final variation of your vision...? How do you put things out there as great as they are in the moment, and then continue to iterate? This has always been the thing that inspired me the most about you - not only that you "did it" but that you did it and then did it better and then better. Was that hard for you? Was it hard to see others copy your work/ approaches/ aesthetics? Especially if they made money doing so? Thank you for being such an inspiration to me, on my owh creative journey. I wish you success and peace in all that comes next for you. xoxo

Grace, I don’t want you to answer our questions. I just want to hear whatever your voice has to say at this moment. What are you thinking about right now and what will you be thinking up until your last exhale on this journey. When you write screenplays the idea is to end the film where the characters are about to inhale on their next story. You don’t need to tell us about that next inhale. Maybe that’s been covered? Then tell us anything. There’s never been a better time for a free write and you know Q&A’s can be painful. What I want you to know is that you scratched an itch for millions of people who care about this stuff and you wrote beautifully and thoughtfully. I hope very much this isn’t your last creative venture for us to enjoy, but also, enjoy your success. I wish GC were more feasible but it ain’t. So go on and enjoy fall with your loves! Visit the Biltmore and allow uncertainty! xxxoxo

I haven’t had time to read much lately, so maybe you’ve posted about this... but have you written about the beauty/ good design solely for the sake of beauty? The joy that simple beauty brings to all of our lives? Your blog and social media accounts have given me a safe place though my marriage, my husband’s affairs, the birth of my daughter, the divorce, dating in my 40s, and the rebirth of my scientific career. I can’t tell you what it has meant to have a consistently beautiful place to visit when I don’t want to, or can’t, think or feel. I can just look at something consistently beautiful and know that if I was able to read, I could learn more about the deeper issues and how I can help make the world better. But often all I could do was look. And the beauty made things better. So thank you for all you’ve done.

I love you and your blog so much! I can’t wait to see what you do next! I would love to know more about how you have changed, the site has become so much more curated over the years! what are the things you feel most passionate about now, what you hope to focus on, what you hope others will invest time, resources, soul, into? I feel good magazine slightly touches on this but more about you (eg. being environmentally design conscious? Being a positive emotional outlet and support for others? Creative outlets for artists?). Congrats and best wishes ahead!

Please write something about why design matters when we are surrounded by so much social and political chaos. Hatred, misogyny, flaming racism, the increasing divide between the rich and poor, gun violence, the rising anti-lgbtq threat—how do you think those of us who love design (and I do passionately!) also make a difference in this critical historical time? I’d love to hear your thoughts because I think you have a unique perspective on the world. And I think you’re wonderful!
