If you ever spot a resting Hawaiian monk seal, use the "rule of thumb" to keep an appropriate distance from the endangered species. Simply make a “thumbs-up," extend your arm out straight in front of you and turn your thumb parallel to the ground. If your thumb covers the entire seal, you're far enough away! .

@hawaiianairlines as Hawaiians we suggest that before landing you do an informative video about the do’s and don’t ‘s of the island . Keep your distance from the honu’s... picking up their trash!! Respecting the aina!!

It would be good to mention this in the announcements made on the plane when landing in Hawaii. Every time I’m home on Kauai, there are tourists who go up and bother the seals and the honu.

By law, 20 feet away or you could get a big fine. They are an endangered species. Admire them from afar. Sea turtles too! Aloha! 🧜💚🌴🌊🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴💙💙💙🌊🌊🌊🌊

Good to know. We saw one and didn't know what to do. Thankfully a lady was near by and directed us which way to go.

@yoitsheatherfeather yes! Saw a tourist couple of days ago at Ho’okipa on Maui sitting on a honu for a photo! 😣

@bhursh88 or if it’s really really important to get a selfie you can basically just go up and pet them.
