In this video I explore whether hyena have gotten a bad rap from documentaries & movies of old and if the new Lion King film will further perpetuate this. I’m posting 2 questions on Instagram stories. Please head over and participate. Thanks 🙏🏼

I really loved this video. I answered the questions on your story and I admit I didn't think positively or even liked hyenas actually because of the cartoon version of the lion king from when I was young. I became afraid of hyenas when I was young and even as an adult until I started watching your videos and documentaries. I erroneously believed and thought they were filthy, vicious conniving animals. I've always, since I was very young, been fascinated with large cats and mainly lions. So i think the cartoon version of the lion king intensified the gap between those two predators. That being said lion king had always been my favourite movie, the new and old version. But now when i saw this version i could say"oh that's not true, Kevin showed me otherwise." Your channel and videos and documentaries have been so profoundly rewarding not only because of the entertainment but mainly due to the education. I watch everything you post whether it's YouTube or Instagram because learning about all of your animals and seeing them for how they actually are is just amazing. I can't think of another word, a stronger word than amazing. The impact you have had Kevin on me and my mindset about these different predators is immense. So thank you🙏🙏🙏

1) My thoughts on the Lion King is that it’s only a story, and the hyena’s role has more to do with Scar’s character flaws.
2) I think I’d have left the film confused and negatively influenced without realizing it. Mostly because that was the case for me when I saw the Lion King as a child and grew up thinking of hyenas as villains. Your videos about them fascinated me because they dispelled the narrative I had as a child.
That said, I know that Disney also does nature documentaries for things like Earth Day and Finding Dory changed some of the narrative around marine conservation that they made a mistake on in Finding Nemo. Disneyland also houses cats (@catsofdisneyland )in the park and makes sure they get medical attention, food, and shelter. Disney as a whole does pay attention to the impact they have on animal welfare.
Maybe it’d be worth it for you individually, or all of us as fans, to reach out to Disney to create a new narrative about hyenas. Maybe through their Earth Day films, a short film like what Pixar does, or, heck, maybe a Lion King sequel that features a different hyena storyline.

Well, if you think about killer whales for instance, people love, respect, and accept them as they are yet they brutally kill to survive just like any other creature must. Some of them, kill and eat cute little sea lions or baby humpback whales and everyone can accept them just as they are. They kill in squads just like a pack of hyaenas does. They all take little bites until the prey eventually succumbs to the onslaught, to the attack. Nobody thinks of killer whales as if they are these creepy heartless weirdos. Personally I have never felt that way about any animals. It’s the same with snakes or insects. Lots of people are just weirded out about snakes and/or insects. The animals just do their thing and as long as you understand what is what with any particular creature then you understand where the boundaries of each relationship lies.

Nah. The Lion King is what first snagged my interest when I was a kid. Those three have been some of my favorite Disney characters since I was young. In fact, I just bought the Shenzi, Bonzai, and Ed Funko Pops when I discovered them yesterday. I love the other characters, of course, and Scar is my favorite Disney villain, but holy cow, I had to jump on those. Hyena stuff is already hard to come by. Disney Hyena Trio stuff is even harder. The way I see it, people who take their wildlife lessons from Disney movies aren’t using logic to begin with and, unfortunately, I’ve found they often don’t care to learn facts. That’s not true of everyone though, so it’s always worth a try.

Hihi Bongo is like ma dog Bo....if I have to do with other people or animals.... he needs to get in and say's..."hey hey touch me - I'm here!!!!!" .... up to know I haven't seen the movie. But every animal has the right to live. Every animal is a part of the nature and also hyenas are a part of the nature. I know they kill also lions sometimes but it is like it is. ....and I hope that the most people understand that comics are not the reality. Also some documentations not fair sometimes. They gave some animals a bad backround that a lot of people think, that these animals are use less. I HOPE ONE DAY ALL OF US ARE EQUAL.

It won’t have the same reach as the new movie, unfortunately, but in the Lion King tv show Disney has airing right now (The Lion Guard) there’s a female hyena, Jasiri, who is one of the ‘good guys’. The show makes a point of explaining that the hyenas aren’t inherently bad or evil, and at the end of the day they’re just the same as the lions (the song about this in particular has something like 9 million views on youtube). Small mercies, I suppose. I’m just hoping Disney makes sure to bring that kind of message to the mainstream audience’s attention, because it’s there in the wider franchise, just not so much the movie.
