[[📸@honngy]] Pitumarca is inhabited by the Quechua, a friendly people living in the foothills of the Vilcanota mountain range. They farm papas 🥔 and breed alpaca/llamas 🦙 to sustain their communities.
.
The Quechua welcome climbers with enthusiasm, but under an important condition- we must exit the valley before dark. Turns out alpaca are extremely timid animals, and pregnant alpaca even more so. Cars driving down the winding road at night can scare a pregnant alpaca to the point where she loses her baby 😟
.
Communicating is an essential component in maintaining relations between climbers and the Quechua. If we want to climb on their land we must ask, listen to, and respect their wishes. Pitumarca is a fresh opportunity for climbers to build positive experiences with the locals. I’m grateful to @cocorsirvas for helping translate and allowing us to participate in these early stages 🙏🏻🙏🏻 @honngy @emilyharrington @jacopolarcher @thenorthface_climb #pitumarca #climbing

Thank you for acknowledging the peoples who’s land you are climbing on and being sensitive to their needs. Traveling and climbing on other peoples land can often too closely resemble a form of colonialism and not all climbers have nailed it lately. This is refreshing! Thank you!!
