Notre-Dame came far closer to collapsing than people knew. How was it that fire ravaged one of France’s most revered monuments? And how was it saved? The design of the fire alarm system was riddled with faulty assumptions, and set up to send alerts without actually fighting flames. Then the security employee on duty — who had been on the job only 3 days — went to the wrong building to find the fire and waited 30 minutes before calling the fire department. That delay left firefighters in a nearly impossible position, but around 500 of them still battled the blaze into the night. After the cathedral’s iconic spire collapsed, some of those firefighters — at the peril of their own lives — entered the burning northern tower to protect it from flames at a moment when it could have collapsed at any time. ashleybellendaine @natstodt28 may I assume the same of you? I personally have not donated to either cause as of yet, because I am saving every penny I have to go to college and become a civil rights lawyer. The least these newspapers and billionaires could do is donate to causes that save our planet. They don’t need all that money.

rooqster34 "at the peril of their own lives" no life is worth saving a building. Kudos to the firefighters for working hard to put the fire out but never risk a life.
