This spotted salamander my be cute, but those spots tell predators to STAY AWAY. They can also secrete toxins to prevent predators from eating them. Bold!

I saw these little guys in a "docudrama" in the American Museum of Natural History in New York, I think it was called "Backyard Wilderness". It was a terrible film. Without spoiling too much, one of the last scenes features a girl - she's supposed to be 12 but she's played by a 16 year old - telling her father to stop their family minivan for a bunch of spotted salamanders crossing the road in the dead of night while it's pouring rain. Hazard central even with the high beams on. What else do they do, they pick up these spotted salamanders and carry them, forcing other cars to stop in the darkness of a rainy night. They don't show it but I imagine in a real life scenario they'd have gotten some major honkage and a few choice words. Any-who, the girl and her brother pick up these salamanders - these salamanders that secret a toxin to ward off predators - disrupting a journey said salamanders are reported to have made for hundreds to thousands of years on the same path. I can understand the positive intent, since some salamanders get run over as they cross the road, but all I could think watching was, "You dense kumquats!" A few salamanders getting squished is sad, but it's not uncommon for animals making journeys to die by vehicular or natural means. It's part of life, and those deceased animals just become food for other animals - some animal species are immune to or not as severely affected by the toxins of some animals, FYI - and the circle of life continues. Keep in mind, this same girl I mentioned in my rant was doing a school science report on salamanders, so she'd know these specific salamanders are toxic and should not be touched or handled in any way by bare human hands, but I guess she either skipped that part of her research or didn't pay close attention. They were driving away from home so I'm hoping they thoroughly washed their hands after handling the salamanders at wherever it was they went.
