If I’m really honest, I get a little scared to talk about my diet as it’s such a sensitive topic 🥦 However, it is something which I am hugely passionate about. In fact, I would say it is one of my biggest passions! 🙊 The more I’ve learnt about eating a plant focused diet, the more I want to encourage positive change in those around me 🙏🏼 I am never here to judge anyone or to use guilt or shame to motivate change, I am purely here to spread education, knowledge and empowerment. So in honour of that, here’s 5 reasons I encourage you to eat more plants 🌱
1️⃣ On average one calorie of animal products requires 5x more water than one calorie of plants 💦
2️⃣ Dietary greenhouse gas emissions are approximately double for meat eaters than vegans. Even just halving your meat consumption results in 40% reduced nitrogen emissions, 40% reduced GHG emissions and 23% less land use 🥳
3️⃣ World fish stocks are set to collapse by 2048 with 80% of current stocks being critically overfished or already collapsed. Plus 46% of ocean plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch comes from the fishing industry 🌊
4️⃣ Plants are nutrient powerhouses - packed full of fibre, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and tonnes of beneficial goodness! Our bodies love them 🍉
5️⃣ 153 million farm animals are killed A DAY for human consumption, not including marine life. Eating more plants is a compassionate choice 🐷
Let me be clear - I am not telling you to go vegan overnight! 😝 I’m asking you to try adding more plant based meals into your diet. In a recent interview I did with an Oxford University researcher about the future of food, I was informed that every single person in the developed world needs to reduce their animal product intake for us to be in with even a chance of positive climate, biodiversity and health outcomes 🙏🏼 No idea where to get started? Check out my new recipe ebook Eat More Plants - linked in my bio! I’ve had such amazing feedback on the simplicity and flavour of the recipes 🥳 I hope it can encourage you to eat more #plantsfortheplanet 🌍💙

Seeing as your being so honest, I am going to be too! I am currently still a meat/fish eater, but that meat/fish consists of chicken and salmon and nothing else. I’d like to be plant based and live sustainably to help save our planet but I won’t lie because I’m finding it really hard. To completely overhaul your entire life and change lifetime habits is really difficult! But I’m trying, as hard as I can. I use a reusable water bottle and coffee cup, I use Tupperware instead of foils and clingfilms, I buy all fruit and veg loose, I’ve recently ordered wax wraps for food storage so as not to use plastic wraps, and my diet is changing, slowly. It’s a huge change for me but I’m excited to see how much my habits have changed by this time next year. And you are a huge inspiration for it all @zannavandijk so don’t ever feel like you have to explain yourself ?

Great post! ❤️ I understand the fear of hate comments, I am 24 and have been plant based for almost a decade now. I am so grateful that awareness and understanding about the importance of plant based diets is increasing and becoming common knowledge, but hey what a ride! When I was in high school being a vegetarian was almost unheard of or considered weird and unnatural in my community, and still today sometimes you have to explain it defend your own life choices ??

I think people need to remember that a vegan diet isn’t a thing . It’s plant based . Vegans don’t eat plants but wear leather. I’m not hating on you or this post . It’s amazing for the animals that more and more are transitioning to a plant based diet . But as a ethical vegan , and someone who fights for the animals on a daily basis I find it really upsetting wen people say they are vegan but happy to wear leather etc ... vegan and plant based are not the same at all .

Totally agree we all need to reduce our meat consumption and be more plant based but personally I think if we can eat local, organic & free range meat, fish, eggs etc then a good balance can be struck. Important to continue to support our local farmers (I’m in Scotland) as fishing for example is an important part of the economy here. People will continue to eat meat and fish (for health reasons too as I do) but it’s how it is done that needs to change.

I’m not vegan (cheese is just too tempting for me, but working to cut back), but dropping meat has had the most unbelievable impact on my body, a bonus because I dropped meat for environmental and cruelty reasons. Some of the tastiest meals are totally plant based (8 different veggies in my dinner tonight) and we can genuinely all make a difference. Keep spreading the word Zanna, we’re right here with you ???

I just bought your book #eatmoreplants and made your DELICIOUS pumpkin soup, seriously yum! We are making a conscious effort to have more plant based meals, so starting with work lunches and then will gradually build from there!
Next is the sweet potato curry which my husband picked out (never would have though he would want to be on the plant based bandwagon!)
