Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | Regal Eagle: Found only in North America, bald eagles almost went extinct in the 1960s due to hunting. Thanks to the protection of the Endangered Species Act, they were able to make a comeback. These powerful and graceful birds are most abundant in Alaska, with a population of approximately 30,000 there. When I was a kid growing up in Colorado, bald eagles were locally extinct. Now they’ve returned, and I regularly spot three of them just downstream from my house. For more on these and other beautiful birds, follow @pedromcbride. #baldeagle #Alaska #recovery #flight

@natgeo why such a call against hunting when in reality it was pesticide that caused the decline in eagle population. There is a strong bald eagle population in Florida also I’m not quoting a number but I do know the conservative effort is going on in a big way. One of the few good things from the government came in the 40-50s range when protection was passed on the eagle. No need to have hunting painted as such a bad thing

They are here in the east as well, near our waterways, the Susquehanna, LeTort, Yellow Breeches and the Conodoguinet! Wildlife teems in the untouched areas, yet has been diminishing in the meadows at the fort of the mountain.

Yeah. It wasn't primarily based on hunting. It's mostly habitat destruction and the use of DDT containing chemicals according to the Fish and Wildlife service

Love that Story and glad they have made a comeback ! Years ago they needed to kill to eat / at least that’s what I hope it was ?! Ummm ❤️❣️?

It wasn’t due to hunting, it was due to DDT, which weakened the shells of the eggs so that the babies couldn’t be born.
