Photo by @sofia_jaramillo5 | Skiers hike a ridge at Silverton Mountain in Colorado. This backcountry ski resort is located in the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. It is unique because it in one of the only backcountry ski resorts in the lower 48 of the United States. Visitors are required to ski with guides for most of the year except for late spring when there is less snow and non-guided skiing is allowed. Everyone who goes must have taken an Avalanche 1 certification course and carry backcountry equipment. ritaburns74 The San Juans are breath-taking. In more ways than one. The summits are above treeline. That's 11,000 feet. 14,000 feet+ is the average summit.
