On September 28, 1983, Michael Stewart, a twenty-five-year-old art student, died from injuries incurred while in police custody. The news of his fate devastated the artists, writers, punk and nascent hip-hop musicians, gallerists, and renegade youth with whom he associated, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, who said repeatedly, “It could have been me.” The painting Basquiat made in response to Stewart’s death is the center of a small but timely and often surprising powerhouse of a historical show at the Guggenheim.
