Green Bank, West Virginia, adheres to the strictest ban on technology in the U.S. Cellphones, Wi-Fi, microwave ovens — any devices that generate electromagnetic signals — are banned to protect a cluster of radio telescopes in a nearby mountain valley. In this photo, a worker walks on the expansive surface of one of those telescopes. Rather than magnifying visuals, the telescopes work like hypersensitive ears — powerful enough to detect the death throes of a star, but also vulnerable to our loud world. At a time when America’s off-the-grid places are disappearing, the town has become a destination for those simply seeking a bit of solitude.
