Did you know there is a plan to rip these beautiful stairs out 😭 the state of Hawaii is considering spending over 1 million $ to rip these out as opposed to finding a solution to making them accessible. Here’s the question, what would you do if it were your choice? Remove the stairs and spend a million, or invest in repairs and open them as an attraction?

To me this is a catch 22. If they spend the money to restore them so they are accessible, that means more people littering all over this beautiful place, and probably feeling entitled to walk all along the mountainside off the stairs where they should not be. This would cause tons of erosion and pollution to this beautiful place. On the other hand, making them accessible would be amazing for the people who would truly respect and admire this place... however most people would just take it for granted.

I live in the town just below these mountains. While I’m opposed to having the stairs removed, I also know that it has become a liability issue. I’ve seen many rescues here that cost taxpayers lots of money. Basically it’s those people who ruin it for others. So if you’re not fit to do this hike please don’t go up. Don’t be that person... ?

Not necessarily, there’s been a lot of debate over the Haiku Stairs. Here is a recent link that Hawaii News Now posted regarding the situation: https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/06/25/tear-it-down-or-reopen-it-new-evaluation-could-point-way-haiku-stairs/
There’s a link in there where you can submit comments and or letters. ???

What a crazy view. @jerre_stead I dont know, its hard to say. From what I understand the mountains there are really important to natives spiritually so maybe thats a reason?? They want less people walking on the mountains?? Im not sure, it sure is amazing to see though

Local govt is actually in the process of making their decision and are taking comments from the public. You can go to haikustairs .org follow instruction on how to leave a comment for the decision/policy makers.
