Well there I was in Shetland enjoying my Dad visit, riding my bike in preparation for the bicycle tour of Italia this week, when a strange thing happened....
After a 70 mile cycle ride last Monday I went to bed with a tickle behind my leg and a shiver in my bones.
18 hours later I was hospitalized with an infection that was creeping into my blood giving me a severe 40 degree temperature.
I was looked after by strangers in the form of doctors and nurses at the Gilbert Bain hospital in Shetland.
Isn’t that slightly amazing and weird?
Complete strangers keeping deaths door at bay for complete strangers.
People giving the ultimate service....
In the midst of all this, as you can see, I was rather fortunate to have a bed with a view and world cup cricket to nod off to.
I emerged from the hospital delirium after 4 days; my Italia bike ride in tatters but my gratitude levels flying high.
Thank you to all those amazing strangers that kept this old sock afloat.

brandibee_doo Thankful there were amazing warriors keeping an eye on you for your recovery. I’m a nurse in America and there is nothing more meaningful than meeting someone in the worst of times and guiding them through to the best of times. God bless and prayers for continued healing ?

wizznizz What...a....view!!! It makes my workplace hospital view look like garbage (and it’s a view of the Brisbane river and Brisbane city - Australia) haha. ? Oh and good work to the health workers getting you on the mend ?

wayne_dob Good to see you've recovered. Where would we be without the paramedics, nurses and doctors of the NHS. Pity our government don't seem to think in the same way and just want to grind it into the ground.

van_beardenstein American here, I'm so used to seeing you on Arrow, that I was flabbergasted at how you were able to survive a 40 degree (assumed Fahrenheit) temperature. Then I realized you indeed meant Celsius.
