When I went off for my first ride from his house here in Shetland a few days ago, it reminded me of the time we moved to the countryside when I was 14. I’d had a paper round in the town we moved from but there wasn’t much in the way of work for a 14 year old out in the sticks at the new house. The first weekend there he asked me what I was going to do about a job. “Well there’s not much going on around here Dad, we’re in the middle of nowhere now.” “Not sure about that son, get on your bike and go and find yourself a job” I protested, but he told me to just get on with it. So I got on my bike and off I went. About 7 hours later I came back with not one, but two jobs, one on a farm and one working for a Doctor who had a big country house with horse stables to muck out, saddlery to polish and odd jobs around the garden. “Well done son” my Dad said and that was that. I realized much, much later what this taught me at a young age....there’s ALWAYS something out there, no matter where you are, or how bleak or barren it looks. Later in life, it gave me faith to travel the world knowing something would turn up wherever I was, you just had to dig around and think positively. Sydney, London, wherever. I was down to my last 20 bucks in New York in ‘92 so I pounded the streets knocking on restaurant doors for hours knowing it would come good eventually... Later I felt alright moving to LA to see how acting would work out. And if THAT didn’t work out, it’s ok, I’ll go back to London, there’ll be a job there. Because of that faith, I ended up traveling the world, learning a lot about myself, people and the world around me. And as a result of all that, today I feel like I’m one of the lucky ones. But I didn’t learn it by myself... Thanks Dad, I love you. Here we are eating lunch on a far flung Shetland isle. Happy Father’s Day... X」6月17日 0時50分 - paulblackthorne

It was funny coming back to my Dad’s house on a bicycle after all these years.
