This group of people at a pool in France are breaking the law. The “burkini,” a bathing suit that allows Muslim women to dress modestly for swimming, was banned by several French cities, and religious symbols aren’t allowed in any publicly owned spaces, including pools. To protest the bans, Muslim women from Alliance Citoyenne, a group in Grenoble, began going to swimming pools in the suits last month as an act of civil disobedience. The group’s head organizer said that when the women in burkinis got out of the pool, there were two police buses waiting for them and they were fined. (📸: Alliance Citoyenne)

adarsh_dacha Telling women what to wear or what not wear is oppressive. The fact that Islam tells women to cover up and not reveal is oppressive and at the same time the government banning a covered bathing suit is equally oppressive. This is why government screws up everything it touches

clairehazelb Why is this an act of rebeliousness is beyond me. An act of desobedience would be taking it off. With due respect to their religious beliefs, I just do not understand it. I do think a fine for wearing them is an excessive measure.

lfvanderland It’s only oppression if the woman wearing it doesn’t want to, and isn’t allowed to make that decision for herself. If a Muslim woman chooses to follow her faith in this way and is given the choice, then it isn’t oppression.

sherry_777.blossom I don't see the problem here with the Muslim women wearing burkini in public as long as she is not hurting anyone..what is your problem France with this..it is just a suit...where us your freedom for all citizens.

trilawgirl So Itsy Bitsy bikinis (and nude beaches) are just fine or going to the beach in “regular” clothes is all a-ok but something that covers up MORE skin is not? France you have lost your mind.

rebellious.liberty Why should anybody care about what someone else wears? Not allowing religious symbols of any kind in public spaces is a huge violation of rights, not to mention free expression
