I shot this popular image in January this year in Antarctica by predicting/guessing where the penguin will surface and starting to shoot before it came out of the water. You can ask others who were on the trip….while many people walked around, I sat on the beach in a place with lots of penguin activity for a couple hours and worked the situation until I got some images I was very happy with, including this one. This behavior is called “porpoising” and is how penguins catch a breath and see where they are going while swimming fast. And they really do fly – just underwater, using those small but powerful wings.
