Like straws or single-use plastics, the current materials used in surfboard construction will have to go the way of the dodo. Which is why for our most recent Stab in the Dark, @MFanno rode 11 epoxy boards that met @sustainsurf’s ECOBOARD standards. Hit the link in our bio for what exactly makes a board "eco-friendly", a new initiative called @sea.trees and how although we're making moves in the right direction, we still have a long way to slide.

scottmain76 I'll never have enough money to experiment and create my dream eco friendly surfboard. so I put it to you. make surfboards out of plastic, like a soda pop bottle, all ribbed n that. injected into a mold. put the pressure into the board through a valve and there you go. when its done, ment it down and make a new one. Like I say, I've no money so I can't explore this concept, but if someone reads this and has the money to try it then go for it. if it doesn't work then we know it doesn't work, but id it does then it could be the perfect solution. I can remember kicking soda pop bottle down the street as a kid and they are very durable.

neenicreations I am happy to see any progress and improvements as a stepping stone for future technologies. I am still a big believer in up cycling old boards.... either with repairs or as artwork. But thanks to @MFanno and @rob_machado for this vid. It’s a start!

grainsurfboards Everyone involved in surfing should be trying to be less harmful, makers and consumers. Especially those on tour, they set the trends and show what’s possible. We’ve seen good surfers ride “alternative” boards and shred.

the_nice_norwegian Oh so now i gotta ride a wood surfboard cause im not on tour? I guess the 2 surfboards i buy this year are gonna cause global warming. ??‍♂️ #downwithhippies

kellentrachy @wsl should require ecoboards in competition, right @wslpure? A number of the top men and women are already using them, why not require all competitors?
