Photo by @amivitale | It's World Giraffe Day and they need our help. Giraffe are undergoing what is being termed a silent extinction. Populations across Africa have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades and reticulated giraffe, one of the four giraffe species, (pictured here running inside northern Kenya's Leparua Community Conservancy) number fewer than 16,000. The decline is thought to be caused by habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching, but with the lack of long-term conservation efforts in the past, it's hard to know exactly. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to understand why giraffe are disappearing and what can be done to stop it. For a recent @ナショナルジオグラフィック story, I followed a group from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation), the San Diego Zoo Global (@San Diego Zoo), and the Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya) as they worked to collar and tag 11 giraffe in the Loisaba (@loisaba_conservancy) and Leparua Conservancies in Northern Kenya. Learn more by reading my @ナショナルジオグラフィック story "How to save the world's tallest animal" and follow @amivitale @giraffe_conservation and @San Diego Zoo
