“This is freestyle, it’s off the top of my head,” said the dancer @jose.xtravaganza. “Everything in this art form is self-expression: That’s what voguing is.” José, who was selected for free ballet training by Eliot Feld when he was in third grade, started visiting the piers — the West Side waterfront where young members of the Latino and African-American L.G.B.T.Q. community congregated — just before his freshman year at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. “I found my tribe,” he said. As a teen, José appeared in “Paris Is Burning,” Jennie Livingston’s acclaimed 1991 documentary about the 1980s drag ball scene, now playing at @filmforumnyc; he’s also on @poseonfx. The recognition of voguing’s importance in culture is gratifying to him. “The ballroom community was built on hope and dreams,” he told the #nytimes writer @giadk. “A lot of these people aren’t here to celebrate this, and this is what they wanted.” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
